After spending two weeks in Nepal, I realized that I want to do something to help people in developing countries. I am planning to study international relations and foreign languages at university.
meeting new friends
Hello! My name is Julia and I am a 20-year-old girl from Sweden, the country in the north of Europe that is famous for its cold and dark winters. I come from a very small town in the south-western part of the country. I have lived here all my life and I like this area a lot, especially since it is so quiet and peaceful. Life has a lot to offer and it is impossible to list all the things that I like here, but some of my interests are singing, listening to a wide variety of music, reading books and magazines, going for long walks, being out in the nature, travelling, seeing new places and learning about foreign cultures. Last semester I took a short English course through online distance learning. If all goes according to plan, I will start a longer, campus-based course in global studies after the summer vacation. I am totally blind since birth, but I never let my disability stop me from achieving my goals and enjoying life to the fullest. Many people ask me how I type and read on the computer. I type on an ordinary keyboard. The text then comes up as braille dots that I can feel with my fingers on a display that is connected to the computer. When I have finished reading a line and want to change to the next one, I press a certain button. Then new dots will appear. The display shows the text instantly, just like the screen does. I do have a screen as well, so that I can get sighted assistance if I am having problems with something. I almost cannot believe how fast the technology has developed since I started primary school. It is really fascinating. Since 2006, I am a working member of the Swedish Association of Visually Impaired Youth. I am a person who loves to try new and exciting things. Naturally, I need more time than sighted people do to complete many tasks, but I still strive to see possibilities instead of obstacles. There are solutions to most problems - sometimes the problems just have to be solved in a different way. When I am in a crowd of people, I am quite shy and then I usually stay in the background, but I nevertheless love meeting people and having stimulating conversations.
Please feel free to send me a message if you want to ask something or just say hello. Anyone who wants a new friend is welcome to contact me, so you can be of any age and from anywhere in the world. Thanks for reading!
