Insurer pays for disabled driver snub
Written by Able_Here_Team

A disabled driver has won £4,000 compensation from an insurance firm which refused to give him a quote.

Thomas Atkins was told by Insure And Go he could not get cover because his car had special hand controls.

So he sued under the Disability Discrimination Act and the broker offered him £4,000 before it got to court.

Mr Atkins, 68, of Doncaster, is now considering legal action against other firms which failed to offer a quote.

He said: "Hopefully all insurers will sit up and take notice of disabled drivers."

Helen Smith, of disabled drivers' charity Mobilise, said: "It's blatant discrimination."

Insure And Go said: "As a broker, our ability to quote for motor insurance is subject to the policies of the underwriter we work with.

"If a vehicle was modified it would have to be referred to underwriters. This has been changed so if a vehicle is modified for a disability, we can supply a quote."
