The Benefits and Work website was launched, in his spare time, in 2002 by Welfare Rights Worker Steve Donnison.
It has rapidly grown into one of the UK's major providers of information about incapacity and disability benefits and is now Steve's full-time occupation.
Initially everything on the site was free.
But the amount of information needing updating increased to unmanageable proportions for a spare-time project.
So, in May 2005, parts of the site became available to paying subscribers only and the site became Steve's primary occupation.
As of August 2006 almost all the information on the site has become subscription only.
Introducing subscriptions has allowed Benefits and Work to remain entirely independent at a time when virtually all other welfare benefits information providers receive payments from government departments and/or from institutional funders.
By contrast, every penny of Benefits and Work's income comes from subscribers, both individual claimants and organisations which support claimants, such as advice agencies and disability groups.
This leaves Benefits and Work free to dig out and publish the truth without worrying about upsetting government departments.
It also means Benefits and Work doesn't have any concerns about falling foul of the Charity Commission or big funders by being overtly political or even criticising high profile voluntary sector agencies when appropriate.
So, if you're looking for practical, detailed, accurate and often previously confidential information about disability and incapacity benefits written solely with the interests of claimants in mind, then you're in the right place.
