Getting proof of my disability

Hi I was born with a disability and I'm currently 25years old and I'm wanting to get allowance from the government in Australia. Before I can apply I need medical documents to show proof that I have a disability of speech language impairment. Right now I don't have any because I was never given any.

When I was 9 years old a teacher suspected that I wasn't normal because I was doing tests poorly so they told my parents to do a verification test if I had a disability. My parents took me to some children's hospital to do tests and have verified that I have a disability so the school given me a teacher aid support. I have lost contact with my teacher aid since I graduated High School.

So how would I actually get proof that I have a disability? do I need to go to back to that same hospital to see if they still have records? even though it's been over 15years and I'm now an adult. Or should I go to some specialist to redo the tests to verify that I have a disability?

Hi Ruriko,

I'm in the US, so I'm not familiar with Australian laws regarding how long medical records are kept. It would be great if you could get your original medical records from the hospital your parents took you to as a child, but since so much time has elapsed, you should probably be seen by a new doctor in any case. This would be a way to get started, anyway, toward collecting disability or some kind of therapy/treatment or even special vocational training if you are ultimately found able to work. Good Luck! :)
